Tea lover planned a visit to Narran- Khagan valley particularly to explore the beauty of fairy tale lake Saif-ul-Malook of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. This lake remains frozen throughout the year except from June to November.

Getting to the lake is worth experience, where you are welcomed by snow covered peaks of mountains with joy of beauty and fear of land sliding. During tourist season, we had an experience of boarding through a four wheeler jeep from Narran through road. Even, we can’t say it road these are non-metallic patches, bumps, jumps, zig-zag route. You are completely at the mercy of an experienced driver, who knows better to get through glaciers for around an hour.

Way to Saif-ul-Malook

When this year when I took take tea at Fairy land hotel and started my travel to this amazing fairy lake which is situated at the sky high elevation of 10,577 ft (3,224 m). My guide told me that I can only go up-to the glacier with vehicle which I have rented. Furthermore, I have to choose horse riding or option of hiking which seemed very risky with most adventurous track.

Horse Riding

It was better option to go with horse riding with an experience rider who knew the track nature and conditions otherwise it may had more risky while it was raining too. While riding on horse through snow covered track I heard scaring sound of land sliding and thunder which sometime making it awful.

Passing through tiny hilly paths many times horse slipped too. But guide managed to continue by pulled reins to reach to the top of the mountains areas. When my eyes witnessed the sign board of “Welcome to Saif-ul-Malook Lake”, I took deep breath. I thanked Almighty for reaching safely to the sight after having around two hours riding.

It was worth experience to see the snow spread everywhere we passed. Previously when I did visit in July I had seen many huts and hotels. Those places were now totally under the snow. Somewhere, I was able to see the few signs of these places otherwise snow and snow was spread.

Although, guide told me that due to partial rains since last week glacier are melting. So somehow parts are lake have stated to come up with their beauties. There were already four-five other visitors who had reached few hours ago were playing with snow and throwing at each-others.

The beautiful frozen lake:

There were few partially covered boats at the bank of the lake waiting for the days to sail in the deep wonderer Saif-ul-Malook as captured in below snap. I wished to stay night at this lake to know more about the myths associated with this lake that at night time fairies come down to lake and dances. Due to unavailability of camping material and closed hotels I was suggested to come down to Narran.

After ridding back for about one and half hours, it was about to dark. I wish you all to get chance to see this adventurous lake during off and on peak seasons, you will surely enjoy the colors of area and beauty of lake. Now, it’s time to take cup of hot tea and will join you with next trip.
